Thrush is an oral infection that is caused by candida fungus, which is also known as yeast. Generally, healthy people have this fungus in their mouth on a constant basis, but it’s kept in check by other bacteria and microorganisms. However, sometimes illnesses, medication, and stress can create an imbalance in the mouth, causing the fungus to grow out of control.
To help you know a little more about thrush, our caring dental team has provided the following information for you:
The causes of thrush are generally medications, like corticosteroids, birth control pills, and antibiotics; or illnesses, like uncontrolled diabetes, HIV infection, dry mouth, cancer, and hormonal changes.
The main symptom of thrush is the quick appearance of a creamy white lesion inside your mouth. It generally appears on the tongue, inner cheeks, gums, roof of your mouth, tonsils, or back of your throat. The lesion might be painful and it might bleed when you scrape it or brush your teeth.
The most common treatment for thrush is taking prescribed medication that puts your oral bacteria back in balance. Your dentist might also provide a dental treatment that is specific for your age and for the reason for the thrush.
