The enamel layer on each of your teeth is composed of a densely packed structure of microscopic mineral crystals. This is what makes your teeth hard enough to bite things off and chew tough foods. As strong as your teeth are there are times when a blow to the face, or other accident, can impart enough force to crack or severely fracture a tooth.

Often times the best way to restore the damaged tooth is to have Faith Cousins DDS restore the enamel layer with a crown.

During the first appointment Faith Cousins DDS will inspect the tooth, to assess the extent of the damage. If the area of decay extends deep down into the internal structures of the tooth, you might need a root canal to restore sufficient structure to mount a crown.

Your dentist will then form an abutment by removing the majority of the enamel layer. This leaves behind a small amount to protect the interior of the tooth. This abutment, will later serve to anchor your permanent crown in place.

At the end of the first appointment, Faith Cousins DDS will take an impression of the abutment, and the surrounding teeth. This will be sent to a dental lab, that makes your new crown. A temporary crown is placed over the abutment to keep it safe, while you wait for the dental lab to complete your new crown.

Once the dental lab has finished your new crown, Faith Cousins DDS will call you in for a brief follow up appointment. The temporary crown is removed and your new permanent crown is cemented in place.
