Did you know that bruxism can destroy your smile? Bruxism is a common oral health disorder commonly linked to teeth grinding. If a person grinds or clenches their teeth together while unconscious, they most likely suffer from bruxism. Fortunately, bruxism can be treated, often with a night guard or a bite plate. However, the first step is spotting the signs that indicate it is taking place.
Bruxism is most often discovered by others, including sleep partners or roommates, who can easily notice and detect any loud teeth grinding noises that you may be creating as you sleep. Another common sign of bruxism can be seen on your teeth, as they can look flat or worn, or even show signs of chipping and cracking that may have happened.
Another common symptom of bruxism is an increase in tooth sensitivity, which is often strongest after you wake up. Bruxism can often cause an increase in jaw pain or soreness. “Chewed” cheek tissue, a locked jaw, and pain similar to earaches are also common signs. Bruxism can also cause TMJ disorders and sleep apnea.
